What types of RVs are there?

A mattress in the trunk or a fully integrated motorhome? This is a tough choice (or perhaps it depends on how you look at your wallet). While young people in particular like to travel inexpensively, professional RV camping can certainly be described as a luxury experience.

Our tip: start small and move up slowly. You have to find the desired level of comfort yourself - but you should never lose contact with nature, because that's what camping is all about. For your first trip, it's best to rent a vehicle and slowly learn the ropes.

If you have a special destination and would like to make day trips from there, a caravan or trailer is a good choice. You can park it at a campsite and create a temporary home away from home. With the uncoupled car you are then maximally flexible during the day.

If you want to change your overnight stay frequently, a camper van is better suited. These are available in many different sizes and variants – from simple converted buses to the luxurious motorhomes that are popular in the US.

Where to stay overnight

Spending the night wherever you want sounds great in theory, but in practice, not every spot is officially allowed. It's important to do your research and find suitable parking areas for your vehicle ahead of time.

You’ll often have to choose between a campsite and a caravan park. Campsites are the all-inclusive option, offering amenities like electricity, water, sanitation, shopping, and more. Caravan parks and parking areas, on the other hand, are much more basic, providing only the essentials—but they come at a much lower price or are sometimes even free.

Wild camping is illegal in many popular travel destinations these days. However, a notable exception is Scandinavia, where the "Right to Roam" allows you to camp in nature. That said, it’s essential to follow the principle of leaving no trace wherever you spend the night.

Which type of license do you need to steer a caravan?

Which license or license attribution allows you to drive a caravan/motorhome? This will depend from country to country, so please do the due diligence of checking out local laws for the area you are traveling in. Often it will depend on your home country highway code and licensing laws for motorvehicles.
