Bike route: EuroVelo5 Via Romea. Saarbrücken – Strasbourg – Basel
From Sarreguemines, a major faience city, the canal, once dedicated to transporting Lorraine coal, runs through the magnificent Sarre valley, crosses Alsace Bossue and the Lorraine Regional Natural Park. At Gondrexange, it joins the Marne to Rhine canal.
Leaving Sarrebourg and the Lorraine plateau via the Saint-Louis/Arzviller inclined plane, a boat lift put into service in 1969, the cycle route plunges into the Zorn valley to cross the Alsace plain up to Strasbourg. It leaves Strasbourg southwards on a cycle path developed along the ILL River, which waters the Alsace metropolis. Upon reaching the confluence of the ILL and the Bruche canal, our cycle route follows the shaded banks of this small canal built by Vauban to transport Vosges sandstone intended for the construction of Strasbourg's fortifications and reaches the Vosges foothills and the Alsace Vineyard cycle route at Molsheim.
Running parallel to the Wine Route, the Vineyard cycle route uses old railways, parts of the ancient Roman road, and many paths among the vines. It runs peacefully along the hillside, crosses about one hundred wine-producing communes and reviews about fifty terroirs "A.O.C. Alsace Grand cru".
From the southern gate of the vineyard, join EuroVelo 6 and the Rhine cycle route. On the way, take time to discover the Alsace Ecomuseum or the technical museums of Mulhouse.
