Discover the Autumn Forest

Rules and Regulations
As climate change progresses, our forests are increasingly affected. This includes long periods of drought, fires, severe storms, and the mass reproduction of certain insects. These changes are happening faster and faster and must therefore be constantly monitored.
The research team behind the MeineWaldKI project would therefore like to test a new way of supplementing the recording of the ecological condition of forests: using artificial intelligence, photos will be used to record and examine the condition of the forest. And you can help: embark on a tour of the autumn forest and take photos there. Every photo submitted is an important contribution!
Here's how it works:
1. Visit a forest area: It doesn't matter what activity you want to do. Once you're in the forest, you can contribute to “Discover the Forest.”
2. Record your activity using the app and take photos of the forest: Cover a total of at least 15 km and take photos of the forest at a minimum of 15 locations using the app (camera icon at the bottom left). To capture the condition of the forest from the ground to the treetops, take three photos in landscape format at each location:📷 one photo diagonally upward into the treetops📷 one photo at eye level into the forest📷 one photo diagonally downward onto the ground
3. Finish and save your recording (including the pictures) at the end of the activity.
Important notes:
⚡You must take the photos directly via the app during your activity—otherwise, they will not be linked to the correct location.
⚡We want to examine the condition of the forest vegetation. Pictures of trails, signposts, benches, or individual animals are less suitable.
⚡Your photos can and should show any type of forest – it is NOT about photographing the most beautiful forest. All forests and forest sections are important to us!
⚡Every photo helps to better assess the condition of the forest – together we can better observe the development of the forest!
⚡After the challenge, you will be asked to participate in a survey—we want to tailor our research to your wishes!
This challenge is part of the MeineWaldKI research project at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. You can find more information about the project and your contribution to forest research on our website.

Terms and Conditions
- Your individual tracks must be at least 10 minutes long and cover a distance of at least 1 kilometer to count toward the challenge.
- Your tracks must be recorded to count toward the challenge. Once you have registered for the challenge, your tracks will automatically count toward the “Discover the Autumn Forest” challenge.
- At the end of the challenge period, you will take part in a survey about your experience. You will be asked to do this by email after the challenge period has ended.
- At each location, you will take three photos of the forest, as explained in the details.
- Uploaded photos must include location information so that they can be assigned to specific forests. Therefore, you MUST RECORD THE PHOTOS WHILE TRACKING WITH THE APP.
