Montségur Castle

Standing at an altitude of 1207m on the highest part of a rocky spur known as a "pog", Montségur castle is mentioned in texts dating back to the end of the 12th century.
However, the first evidence of human occupation of this mountain dates back to around four thousand years BC.At the beginning of the 13th century, the Cathars, followers of a dualist religion declared heretical by the Pope, settled here.
In 1232, the castle became the headquarters of the Cathar church and a refuge for the faidits, local lords dispossessed of their property by the crusade.
