Das Kieler Schifffahrtsmuseum wurde im Jahr 1978 eröffnet.
Kiel ist bereits seit dem Jahr 1242 Hafenstadt. Schiffbau, Seefahrt, Meer, Marine – mit all diesen Begriffen teilt Kiel eine gemeinsame Geschichte. Diese wird vom Schifffahrtsmuseum aufgegriffen und für Besucher erlebbar gemacht. Das Gebäude wurde vom Stadtbaurat Georg Pauly entworfen.
