ATTENTION (July 2025 information): following a fire south of Castelnau de Guers, the signposting may be damaged between the Via Domitia and Castelnau-de-Guers. Rely on the GPS track.
The Traversée du Larzac à la Méditerranée, the culmination of the new Grande Traversée du Massif Central by mountain bike, starts in Millau and reaches the Mediterranean at Cap d'Agde, some 250 km further on. A wink at the Millau Viaduct and you're off to climb the Causse du Larzac, following the Passa Meridia, the Grande Traversée de l'Hérault by mountain bike, on foot and on horseback. Dolomitic pinnacles line the route before arriving at the Grand Site du Salagou, once you've crossed the Monts d'Orb. The contrast between the color of the ruffes and that of the lake is striking. We then head for Pézenas on trails that are sometimes mineral, sometimes volcanic. The gradient becomes much gentler as you follow the Via Domitia, the ancient Roman road linking the Alps to the Pyrenees, through the vineyards. All that remains is to cross the Canal du Midi and follow the Hérault river to the town of Agde, founded by the Greeks. Just a few more laps before you finally discover... the Mediterranean.
