Fenestre mountain pass
A strategic gateway between France and Italy.
This pass has always been a strategic crossing point. Fortifications dating back to the Second World War are evidence of this. In September 1943, the pass served as an exile route for the Jewish community of Nice fleeing German troops. Many of them were interned at Borgo San Dalmazzo, and some were later deported to Auschwitz. A plaque on the pass commemorates this exile. The pass did not become a border until 1947 with the Treaty of Paris.
