Cycling in the Palatinate

On just under 100 km, we discover Germany's second largest wine-growing region and experience the sun-drenched Palatinate at its finest. The cycle path runs the entire length along the western edge of the Rhine plain and crosses many valleys of the streams from the Palatinate Forest. This results in a constant up and down with partly short and steep summits. Countless vintners' farms welcome cyclists with open gates.

The Barbarossa Cycle Route runs across the Palatinate, from the Rhine at the imperial city of Worms, via the Barbarossa city of Kaiserslautern, to the Glan at Glan-Münchweiler near Kusel.

The Rhine cycle path runs through three tourism regions in Rhineland-Palatinate: from the border with France in the south, it passes through the Palatinate, Rheinhessen, and the Rhine Valley until it reaches the NRW border at Rolandseck. It partly uses routes on the towpath often under tall poplar rows directly by the shore but sometimes also makes loops around old Rhine branches or built-up areas.

This cycle tour leads through the hilly hinterland of Bad Bergzabern, where wooded river valleys, old villages and imposing aristocratic estates await us. Smaller climbs characterise the generally pleasant tour, which in one section also runs on French soil.

The Biosphere Route circles the southern part of the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve from Dahn as a circular route, between the Wieslauter in the east, the Sauer in the south, and the small streams Fischbach and Moosbach in the west and north. The Biosphere Route uses these four stream valleys as convenient paths but must overcome their watersheds in two climbs, which take place on quiet forest and woodland paths without any motor traffic. The entire circuit is characterized by a mix of dense forests and open valley meadows with embedded villages.

The Kraut-und-Rüben bike path is especially suitable for pleasure cyclists, as numerous culinary delights await along the way.

The varied route follows the course of the Queich from its source near Hauenstein to its mouth at the Rhine.  

Starting in Kaiserslautern, the route runs for 61 km through the valleys of Moosalb, Queidersbach, Schwarzbach, Rodalb, and Merzalb along the Wieslauter River to Hinterweidenthal.
