During the war of Gustav III (1788–90), two naval battles were fought at Ruotsinsalmi. An overwhelming Russian archipelago fleet attacked the Swedes who arrived from Viapori on 28.8.1789, defeating them. A year later the Swedes evened the score and dealt a defeat to the Russians led by Prince Nassau. Cannons from the frigate St. Nikolai, which sank in the Battle of Ruotsinsalmi, have been raised as diving finds and are displayed on Varissaari (Fort Elisabeth).
