Kymijoki is quite a versatile paddling destination. Locals don’t call Kymijoki the Amazon of Finland for nothing. The large main flow runs through several river branches passing through various landscapes. In many places, the deciduous trees on the shore extend far over the river creating a rainforest feel.

If you want to go to the river now, you will surely be surprised. You will see the rapids roaring and the calm pools. There are village landscapes and a bit of wilderness too.

Kymijoki, the Amazon of Finland, flows as a multi-threaded channel like its model all the way to the sea. For many paddlers, it is still an unknown grandeur or a great secret for those who have experienced it. It is a mysterious current.

This canoeing route connects two historical ironworks areas.

The Kaakko region paddling route takes you through the flowing waters and the roaring rapids of Southeast Finland all the way from Saimaa to the vicinity of the Gulf of Finland. The route offers the most diverse splashes of watercourses in Kymenlaakso and South Karelia! Along the approximately 250-kilometre paddling route traversing South Saimaa, Väliväylä and Kymi River, there are suitable sections for paddlers of all skill levels.

The Väliväylä paddling route follows the old log floating route, through which logs were floated from Saimaa to the Kymijoki water system for 70 years. In 2023-2024, services on Väliväylä between Lappeenranta and Kannuskoski (South Karelia region) have been improved in many ways, including building 22 new paddling piers. Resting places have been added; several lean-tos, toilets, and woodsheds have been built. New start and end points have been marked on the map, and since resting places are spaced about 5 km apart, you can plan your own route according to your needs. The route between Lappeenranta and Kannuskoski is an easy lake and narrows waterway. It can be paddled in both directions and is well suited for family paddling due to the short stages!
