Ski tours in Switzerland

The winter sports resorts in the canton of Grisons have resounding names: Davos, Arosa, Lenzerheide, Flims/Laax. Ski tourers can expect countless mountains, slopes and routes of all levels of difficulty, from easy piste tours to challenging ski mountaineering in the Bernina. Snow is almost guaranteed in Grisons, so ski tours are usually possible well into the spring, depending on the avalanche situation.

The Engadin in the south of Grisons (central town: St. Moritz) offers the ideal combination of ski touring highlights and perfect infrastructure.

A total of 45 of Switzerland's 48 four-thousand-metre peaks are located in the canton of Valais. For ski tourers, this means one thing above all: the sky is the limit! There are almost unlimited opportunities for ski touring and ski mountaineering in Zermatt, for example, with a view of the world-famous Matterhorn and the Dufourspitze, the highest mountain in Switzerland.

Tip: The five-day ski traverse „Haute Route“ from Chamonix to Zermatt is perhaps the most famous ski tour in the Alps!

The large ski areas of the Valais – first and foremost the huge Les 4 Vallées – with their excellent infrastructure, are ideal for ski tours on the pistes with a stop at a hut, but also for off-piste ski touring.

The further you go from Bern towards the south, the higher the peaks become. Top-class ski tours can be found near Interlaken, in the face of the Swiss triumvirate of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, or on the many mountains around the well-known ski resorts of Adelboden (Ski World Cup) and Gstaad.

A unique starting point for medium and difficult ski tours is the Jungfraujoch – thanks to the railway connection, you start here already at 3454 m.

Six cantons make up Central Switzerland: Lucerne, Schwyz, Uri, Obwalden, Niederwalden and Zug. The ski touring mountains of the region are very varied.

The gentle slopes in the north are perfect for the start of the season, for ski touring novices and families. Further south, however, there are also lonely 3000-metre peaks to be discovered that challenge even experienced ski tourers.

Tip: The Mythen region in Canton Schwyz can be reached quickly from Lucerne and offers many medium-difficulty ski tours with magnificent panoramic views.
