The Julian Alps: ski touring routes for beginners and pros
There are suitable ski tours for every level of difficulty in the Julian Alps. The Slovenian mountains are not quite as high as the classic ski touring mountains in the Alps - and therefore the descents are not quite as long. However, they are very varied and often more challenging than you might think.
A popular destination is the Pukljuka plateau. It is best known for the biathlon competition that takes place there every year. Ski tourers are drawn to the surrounding mountains such as Viševnik, Mrežce or Mali and Veliki Draški vrh. Other worthwhile ski tours of moderate to difficult difficulty in the Julian Alps can be found, for example, on Krn (Krennberg), on Mount Meja above the Razor mountain pasture, or in the secluded Mlinarica Valley (on Turn pod Razorjem or Mali Razor).
To the east of the Savetal and therefore outside the Julian Alps, there are also wonderful ski tours in the Karawanken on the border with Austria and in the Steiner Alps.
What do you have to consider when ski touring in Slovenia?
- The best time for ski touring in Slovenia is from January to April. However, depending on the snow conditions, many descents can be skied as early as December and as late as May.
- Equipment and preparation: Ski touring and ski mountaineering should not be underestimated. The sport requires a good level of fitness and very safe handling of the skis. Complete ski touring equipment including avalanche transceiver equipment is a prerequisite. Important: Always check the current avalanche situation and weather conditions before every tour and adapt the route accordingly!
- Mountain guide: Is this your first time ski touring in Slovenia? Then be sure to book a guided ski tour with a local guide.
- If you also want to try out the groomed slopes, you should visit Slovenia's ski resorts. You will find the most slopes in Maribor, but the ski resorts of Cerkno and Krvavec are also worth a visit. Tip: If you want to try out different ski resorts, get the "Ski Pass Slovenia", which is valid for all ski resorts in the country.
