From the basin, where you ski from the top of Debela peč, you have to climb back to the ridge.

Toprecommended route Difficulty moderate
9.7 km
2:45 h
706 m
699 m
Debela peč could be considered as the easternmost border of the Pokljuka skiing realm. This Pokljuka ski tour is also one of the beautiful and less demanding ones.
The Julian Alps
The descent from Draški vrh is one of the most beautiful Slovenian ski touring classics.
Ski Touring · Julian Alps
Veliki Draški vrh (2243 m) – A suitable choice from the list of golden oldies of ski tours
Toprecommended route Difficulty moderate
12.8 km
6:20 h
1,098 m
1,099 m
Veliki Draški vrh, located at the beginning of the long ridge of peaks above Pokljuka, is considered a golden oldie skiing classic among fans of ski touring. Similarly to Rodica in the chain of Bohinj-Tolmin mountains on the opposite side of Bohinj.
The Julian Alps
A view of the snow-capped Kanin peaks from the Soča Valley.

Toprecommended route Difficulty easy
9.8 km

646 m
Mrežce is the shortest ski tour above Pokljuka, suitable for a quick morning or afternoon visit. As the slopes are not exposed to avalanches, Mrežce is also a good choice for powder seekers and testing the conditions after new snow.

We won't be summiting any peaks on the ski touring from Luknja. The tour passes through the foothills of the northern Triglav Wall; instead of wide, open views, we will be amazed by the dramatic Triglav columns, overhangs and precipices.
The Julian Alps
Resting at the top, with the Bohinj-Tolmin ridge behind

The route is very promising soon after snowfall, as it offers, if we are among the first, excellent skiing on freshly fallen snow. The idyllic winter landscape is given a special touch by the snow-covered spruce trees.

The Julian Alps: ski touring routes for beginners and pros

There are suitable ski tours for every level of difficulty in the Julian Alps. The Slovenian mountains are not quite as high as the classic ski touring mountains in the Alps - and therefore the descents are not quite as long. However, they are very varied and often more challenging than you might think.

A popular destination is the Pukljuka plateau. It is best known for the biathlon competition that takes place there every year. Ski tourers are drawn to the surrounding mountains such as Viševnik, Mrežce or Mali and Veliki Draški vrh. Other worthwhile ski tours of moderate to difficult difficulty in the Julian Alps can be found, for example, on Krn (Krennberg), on Mount Meja above the Razor mountain pasture, or in the secluded Mlinarica Valley (on Turn pod Razorjem or Mali Razor).

To the east of the Savetal and therefore outside the Julian Alps, there are also wonderful ski tours in the Karawanken on the border with Austria and in the Steiner Alps.

  • Ski Touring · Julian Alps
Krn (2244 m), a ski mountaineering destination that rarely disappoints
  • Ski Touring · Julian Alps
    Meja (1996 m)
  • Ski Touring · Julian Alps
Turn pod Razorjem (2348 m), skiing gem in the Mlinarica valley

What do you have to consider when ski touring in Slovenia?

  • The best time for ski touring in Slovenia is from January to April. However, depending on the snow conditions, many descents can be skied as early as December and as late as May.
  • Equipment and preparation: Ski touring and ski mountaineering should not be underestimated. The sport requires a good level of fitness and very safe handling of the skis. Complete ski touring equipment including avalanche transceiver equipment is a prerequisite. Important: Always check the current avalanche situation and weather conditions before every tour and adapt the route accordingly!
  • Mountain guide: Is this your first time ski touring in Slovenia? Then be sure to book a guided ski tour with a local guide.
  • If you also want to try out the groomed slopes, you should visit Slovenia's ski resorts. You will find the most slopes in Maribor, but the ski resorts of Cerkno and Krvavec are also worth a visit. Tip: If you want to try out different ski resorts, get the "Ski Pass Slovenia", which is valid for all ski resorts in the country.

Mali Ponza 2502m, Martuljek Group - Julian Alps by Oldrich
