The Sarek National Park is located in northern Sweden and is often called the last wilderness of Europe. Together with the neighboring national parks Padjelanta and Stora Sjöfallet, it offers enormous recreational potential. In Sarek there are no hiking trails or serviced huts, and summer river crossings are often an adventure, as there are hardly any bridges. However, in winter, you do not have the problems with swollen rivers. The routes through Sarek are all very long; you always need to plan several days. A winter crossing of Sarek is a great challenge. You either need a good guide or corresponding experience. Good preparation, training, and winter equipment are prerequisites. North of the Arctic Circle, extreme weather conditions must be expected until spring. Cold and storms can never be ruled out. You are very alone and help is far away. You can safely turn off your smartphone, as reception is only available near the road. After just a few kilometers, you are away from civilization in the midst of a wild, fascinating mountain landscape. Doing such a trip is a truly great experience! I undertook the route described here in March 2020. I was alone and needed 8 days for it. The route begins in Ritsem at Akkajaure. Ritsem is a fjäll station that is open in spring and summer and is located at the end of the road. This is also where bus line 93 ends; once a day, the bus arrives here from Gällivare around noon. The current timetable is available online (see links). The route initially heads south across the wide lake Akkajaure. After about 20 km, the ascent begins into the magnificent Ruohtesvágge, at the end of which the Mikkastugan is reached. The small hut contains the only emergency phone in Sarek - and, I could hardly believe it: there is also a toilet hut! After another 5 km, the route passes through a wide valley west of the Ähpar, a wild mountain massif in Sarek in a northwestern direction. After rounding the conical mountain Sluggá, you reach Lake Pietsaure, cross it lengthwise, and soon after arrive in Saltoluokta. Here you can best recover from the strains of the tour with a multi-course menu, if you wish. The last 4 km over the Akkajaure to the road are then just routine.
