For many ski tourers, Iceland still flies under the radar. But that can't be because of the tours themselves: Ascents with sea views, untouched firn and powder snow until early summer are not uncommon. Where roads used to be closed in winter and whole villages cut off from traffic, more and more beautiful peaks are now accessible for ski tours – for example on the Traskagi peninsula in the north of the island. It's high time for a ski touring trip to Iceland!

Of course, the ascent in Brunnardalur, through which you reach Saudaneshnjukar directly, is great. But if the weather is fine and the snow conditions are good, the "diversions" via Jökulkollur and the racy descent into Saudalur is highly recommended!

Variant A offers an exciting summit slope and a more challenging descent compared to the ascent. It is almost not frequented. Depending on weather and snow conditions, this variant can also be used for the ascent. Ideally, you can drive about 4.5 km further beyond the parking lot by car and park by the roadside just before the stream (late winter). This makes both the ascent and descent via the variant a somewhat more demanding route with sensational views of the fjord. The possibility and feasibility of continuing the drive must be assessed on-site situationally.
However, there are many options for variation. Based on my experiences and analyses of the images and topographic data, variants B, C, and D could also be possible. Who has already gained experience here? If so, please feel free to share your knowledge in the comments below. Thank you!
Update from 15.04.2024: We undertook the route on 10.04.2024 after several days of a severe snowstorm with massive snowfall and huge snowdrifts. Despite the previously adverse conditions, the ascent via the classic route was possible without problems.
At the summit, we discussed the descent and opted for variant A. Unfortunately, the entry via the ridge at about 1100 meters was not feasible because too much snow had been deposited there in recent days. So we decided on variant D instead.
The descent variant proved to be an absolute stroke of luck. The slopes were well blown out and with some knowledge of how the wind shapes its artwork, we repeatedly found wonderfully loose snow for a lively descent. Depending on the situation, we could really push hard and had lots of fun. We cheered down the whole mountain with joy – something we hardly expected after the miserable conditions of the previous days.
Once again, it was a day we will not forget soon. A top route with a great team!

Beim Erreichen des Gipfelplateau hat es mir komplett den Atem verschlagen - nicht wegen der Anstrengung sondern wegen des unfassbaren Rundumblicks !
