This stage is very long, though it can be broken up, with significant altitude changes. However, the reward is immense: it is one of the most beautiful parts of the entire Path of Peace. You’ll have the chance to admire many of the most famous Dolomite mountain groups, one after another, including the Pale di San Martino.

"It is probably the most rewarding route [on the Presanella] for the classic mountaineer, for those who love the high mountains, the rugged environment, the classic mixed terrain where crampons are hardly taken off, and the breathtaking view." There is little to add to this characterization by a local mountain guide. The route is (inexplicably) little frequented and leads over an impressive glacier and a beautiful granite ridge to the highest peak entirely located in Trentino. With the northeast ridge and the descent via the normal route to Rifugio Denza - as described here - or to Rifugio Segantini, it creates an impressive circular tour. (Attention: the indicated track is only schematic!!!) Note April 2024: As I just saw in a photo from autumn 2023 that the upper glacier towards Sella Freshfield and the connection to the lower part is broken, please ask the hut warden about the current access! I would appreciate current route reports.

It should be noted that routes in the Adamello group are not necessarily synonymous with long glacier tramps, but also offer great ridge climbs, as you can experience on Carè Alto, the southeastern corner pillar of the massif. Especially the east ridge (Via Cerana) seems relatively little frequented and offers nice, moderate climbing in tonalite rock. Except for the starting wall (III), the technical difficulties do not exceed those of the normal route from the north. The unique combination of the light tonalite, the broad glacier surfaces, and the Mediterranean atmosphere certainly provide lasting impressions.

Monte Carè Alto traverse (East ridge - North ridge) by Max
