Venice is a city that transports you back in time, especially if you get off the beaten track. Of course, you should see world-famous sights such as St Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace and the Grand Canal. You can also take a ride on a gondola or a vaporetto, as the water taxis are called here. Venice is manageable in size, can be explored from the water and you can see a lot in just one day.

The walk begins when Venice is still shrouded in the deepest silence, at 3:30 in the morning. The city, usually bustling with life, is at this hour a stage of shadows and soft lights, an almost surreal experience. This route, designed to reach Piazza San Marco at sunrise, offers a unique perspective on the lagoon city.

A weekend in Venice

The capital of the Italian province of Veneto is built on more than one hundred closely spaced islands and is perfect for a weekend city break. You can explore Venice on your own or join a guided city tour. A guided tour has the advantage that you will be able to see the most important details. A guided tour usually starts in front of San Marco, Venice's most famous church in the square named after it.

Can you explore everything in Venice on foot?

Venice can be explored on foot or by boat, because the lagoon city is closed to cars. Away from the well-marked routes in the historic centre, time seems to have stood still here. During your visit and city tour, be sure to discover the neighbourhoods beyond the world-famous squares on your own. It's worth it, because in the Sestiere Cannaregio district, for example, you'll find authentic Venetian life and oases of peace and tranquillity.

How long does it take to walk through Venice?

Due to its manageable size, Venice is well suited for a short city tour. In the districts of San Marco and San Polo there is practically one sight worth seeing next to the other. A day trip alone is worthwhile. If you prepare your city tour well on your own or take part in a guided tour, you will see a lot and need a long time to absorb the impressions. If you organise your city tour yourself, it is better to take a watch with you to stay on schedule. For a guided tour of the city, it is best to look for offers in advance. You can book tickets online. Of course, it is much better if you can spend several days in the lagoon city.

What must you see in Venice?

In Venice, you will pass many a bridge and marvel at the palaces of the Doges and Patricians. If you travel comfortably by train, you will arrive at Santa Lucia station, which is located directly on the Grand Canal. The backdrop of Venice will overwhelm you. On the opposite bank, you will see the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Nazareth, built in 1660, just one of Venice's many churches.

Directly at the railway station is the landing stage for the vaporetti, which will take you to your next destination. The Grand Canal with its famous Rialto Bridge is lined with numerous Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque palaces. From the Rialto Bridge you should make a detour to the Fondaco dei Tedeschi. From the roof terrace of the old commercial and now luxury department stores', you have a magnificent view over the main canal and the city.

You could spend a whole day or more in St Mark's Square alone, which is surrounded by magnificent Gothic and Byzantine buildings. In addition to St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, the clock tower Torre del Orologio, the Old Library, the Procuracies, the Münze, the 12th century Campanile and the famous Café Florian are all located here. Venice has many other highlights to offer, such as the sighing bridge Ponte dei Sospiri, the opera house La Fenice, the Sestiere Castello district or the island of Murano, which is famous for its glass art.

sehr schöner Stadtspaziergang, vor allem am späteren Nachmittag, wenn es nicht mehr so voll ist. Geeignet für Kinderwagen, Laufrad und Rollstuhl
