City walks through Salzburg's old town

The old town of Salzburg has been and is the subject of entire books, and rightly so. Anyone who has seen the silhouette of the city standing at the Müllnersteg in the evening light understands why thousands of visitors wander through the Getreidegasse during the day and populate the squares around the cathedral and the Residenz. If you want peace and quiet, you'll probably have to come on a rainy winter's day or be out and about when the city is still slumbering. But a visit is worthwhile despite the hustle and bustle, because Salzburg's Old Town is a total work of art.

The old town is not very large. The well-known sights can easily be visited in a day. Of course, it is advisable to take more time and explore the small side streets or discover the somewhat hidden places. However, these two routes will give you a very good impression of Salzburg's old town:

City walks with metres of altitude: Up the Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg mountains

Salzburg is ideal for anyone who wants to combine a nature experience with a visit to the old town. The city mountains can be perfectly integrated into a city walk, which can then turn into a real hike. The most popular city mountains are Mönchsberg, Kapuzinerberg and the Festungsberg. From Schallmoos, for example, you can take the beautiful, east-facing hiking trail up to the Kapuzinerberg, where great views of the city await you. Here there are numerous options for returning to Linzer Gasse. Now you can cross the Salzach and walk up to the fortress hill. Depending on your mood, you can either descend into the old town or continue along the beautiful paths on the Mönchsberg.

On the way on the outskirts of the city: Leopoldskron and Salzachseen

Of course, Salzburg's old town is the city's major highlight and full of sights worth seeing. But a special feature of Salzburg are also the districts grouped around the old town, which often have a large amount of green space and are therefore equally recommendable for short or long walks. Especially if you want to get to know the quiet side of Salzburg after the hustle and bustle of the old town.

CRYSTAL-CLEAR EXPERIENCE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY OF SALZBURG

City walk with the most beautiful views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is Salzburg's landmark and probably the city's most important attraction. On the one hand, a visit to the largest and most completely preserved castle in Central Europe is of course worthwhile, but on the other hand, the old Gemäuer of Hohensalzburg Fortress unfolds its full beauty from a distance. If you are looking for the best photo spots to catch a very special view, simply follow this route, which leads to various elevations and vantage points from which you can get the best view of Hohensalzburg. Of course, the fortress can also be visited directly; various guided tours are offered.

Things to know about the city walks in Salzburg

Is Salzburg easy to explore on foot?

Salzburg is excellent to explore on a walk or a city walk. The city lies on the banks of the Salzach river, along which you can also walk, always with magnificent views. The old town itself is not too big and the alleys are narrow, so it is best to walk around anyway. For the best views, you can climb the city's mountains, which are usually only accessible on foot.

What sights should you not miss in Salzburg?

Salzburg is rich in sights, in fact the city in itself is a sightseeing attraction. So it's best to just stroll around and enjoy the ensemble of old buildings, parks and beautiful scenery all around. These are the sights you should not miss on your city walks:

  • Mirabell Gardens
  • Hohensalzburg
  • The old town around the Domplatz
  • Festspielhaus
  • Getreidegasse (Mozart birthplace)
  • Linzer Gasse
  • Mozart's residence on Makartplatz

City Walking Tour Salzburg by Regine
June 22, 2022 · Community
