Best Woodland Walks in The New Forest

Step beneath the canopy of the New Forest’s ancient oak and beech trees. These trails are perfect for shaded summer walks and spotting wildlife like deer and birds. Popular woodland routes include:

  • Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary Walk – This easy, family-friendly walk meanders through shady woodland to the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary. A viewing platform overlooks a meadow where herds of fallow deer often gather, sometimes fed by rangers in the summer. It’s one of the best spots in the forest for wildlife watching.
  • Knightwood Oak Trail – A short but rewarding walk that leads you to the Knightwood Oak, also known as the “Queen of the Forest.” Believed to be more than 500 years old, this enormous oak is the largest in the New Forest and is a must-see landmark for history and nature lovers alike.
  • Rhinefield  Tall Trees Trail - This beautiful walk follows, an avenue lined with towering conifers and exotic trees. In spring, the route bursts into colour with vibrant rhododendrons and azaleas, making it one of the most picturesque woodland walks in the New Forest.

Riverside and Waterside Walks

The New Forest isn’t just about ancient trees and open heath — it’s also home to peaceful rivers, winding streams, and a stunning stretch of coastline. From tranquil estuary paths to wild saltmarshes, these waterside walks offer a different way to explore the park’s beauty.

  • Beaulieu River Walk - This scenic route follows the banks of the Beaulieu River, one of the few privately owned rivers in the world. Starting near the historic village of Beaulieu, the path winds past reed beds and quiet inlets, with plenty of opportunities to spot wading birds and even the occasional seal. The riverside setting makes this walk wonderfully peaceful and full of wildlife.
  • Lymington to Keyhaven Marshes Walk - A coastal favourite, this flat and easy path runs along the seawall from the bustling town of Lymington to the Keyhaven Marshes nature reserve. With views across to the Isle of Wight and Hurst Castle, it’s a fantastic spot for birdwatching, especially in winter when migratory species arrive. The combination of saltmarsh, sea air, and open skies makes it a refreshing and scenic walk.

The views and scenery of the first 5km are stunning. The section from Alice Lisle pub along Ellingham Drove is not suitable for walking with a dog. Barbed wire/“no dogs” signs/walking on verge of a fairly busy road. Quite a few of the styles on the final section were broken and/or very steep if your inside leg is under 30”🤣. On a more serious note, several had no way for our dog to pass under. Thankfully, at 20kg, we were able to lift him over between us. An amazing history lesson. You would have no idea how different this area would have been like in the 1940’s.
